Can Drinks Succumb to Trends?

I have a hard time buying in to so- called trends. Mainly in the fashion sense. But also, for home decor and general vibes. Especially with the mass consumption of social media it seems no one has an individual thought or style. Obviously clothes are subject to trends. But are drinks?

I was on a river tour recently with some friends and was going to grab some drinks for us. I went to the bar and was going to grab Chardonnay but they ended up having margaritas so I went with that instead. When I came back to the group I told the story and my friend was like, great so glad you didn’t get Chardonnay I hate it. Honestly didn’t think anything of it in the moment, everyone can have their own opinions on things but a few weeks later I went for drinks with an other set of friends. Chardonnay was a happy hour special so I got a glass but my friend did not. “I don’t like Chardonnay” she says. This piqued my interest. One because only a few years ago she was drinking Chardonnay and two Chardonnay was that girl when it came to wines. Wasn’t it?

Fast forward to this weekend. I’m in Florida, so when I ordered groceries I ordered some wine and I just went with Chardonnay because it auto populated on my Instacart order. I was chatting with a third group of friends asking if they like Chardonnay. No. Absolutely not. We drink sav blanc.

Now this is very interesting to me… mainly because the other girls who poo-poo Chardonnay exclusively drink sav blac. Now don’t get me wrong, I too like Sauvignon Blanc. But I also like Chardonnay. And Pinot Grigio. Honestly, I’m not that picky. But I do find it interesting that only a few years ago all the sav blanc girls were drinking Chardonnay. Was there a cultural moment I missed where everyone decided we were not drinking Chardonnay any more? Is there a sub-culture wine market that dictates what wine the girls drink?

I guess I’ll never know. I’m not an investigative journalist. It is weird tho right? Maybe, wine, like fashion, is cyclical. Mark my words, in 2030 the girls will be back to Chardonnay.
