What I listened to While I Ran My 10k
I just ran a 10k two weeks ago and even though the race was rough - read more about that here - the music was pretty spot on.
I need to listen to music while I run it motivates me, distracts me, overall music keeps me entertained. But choosing the right tunes are key to a successful race.
Normally when I run, I listen to my general running playlist - that has everything from Taylor Swift to Kendrick Lamar to Broadway Showtunes. However, I wanted to be intentional with the music I choose for my 10k. I didn’t want to have fluff songs or filler songs; I only wanted the specific number of songs I would need to finish the race. Who has time to skip a song when you're struggling to breath (call back!).
I started by calculating the number of songs I would need for my playlist. I run about a 10min mile, and songs are about 3 minutes long so that’s about 4 songs per mile. Meaning I needed 25-30 songs for the playlist. (I knew I'd have a few extra songs on the list, but I'd rather that then have to relisten to songs). Knowing that I only had a handful of songs I could add I was deliberately choosing songs that I know were going to pump me up and keep me going. It was definitely a challenge - but I did it. Honestly - one of my better playlists if I'm being honest. A perfect mix of oldies, showtunes, current hits and in-betweens. I didn't skip a single song.
I added the playlist here… hope you like it and it keeps you motivated to finish your race! Or at the very least enjoy being outside in fresh air :)
