How to Propagate Green Onions
In today’s food series I am going to teach myself how to propagate green onions.
I made a pasta dish last night using green onions (recipe to come). The recipe called for only a portion of the green onions to be used. It felt wasteful to toss the remaining bits and I’ve heard of people growing new onions from the roots, so I’d figure I’d give it a try. Who knows… maybe I’ll never have to buy a green onion again! (Homesteading here I come).
I currently have the roots sitting in a glass of water, but I think I need to do a bit more research on the process. Homework time, slash experiment time…
As I mentioned I cut the roots off and put them in a glass jar. Upon research, you are supposed to leave the tops exposed to air. So now I need to find a better container.
Apparently, I do not have a better container, so I ended up just sitting the roots standing up against the side of the wall of the dish, root side down with just enough water to cover the roots. I placed the container near a window and will hope for the best!
I’ll report back once (if) they start to grow!
