Daily Routine for Sensitive Skin

I have very sensitive skin, so I have to be extra cautious of what products I use. Too many fragrances? Dries me out. Too heavy? Breakout incoming.

Getting to a good spot with my skin has taken years, and lord knows I’ve tried all the products. With help from my dermatoligist I’ve landed on mostly drugstore brand items. Branding and packaging are great, but clearer skin is better.

Morning Routine

Step 1:

Every morning, I rinse my face with water. Yes, I just rinse it with water, I don’t use a cleanser. I’ve found that washing my face too much over-dries it and causes more issues than helps.

Step 2:

Apply CeraVe Vitamin C serum. To be honest, this is a newer addition to the routine, but after a lot of research I’ve learned the benefits of Vitamin C. Truthfully, I’ve noticed a difference in the brightness and overall complexion of my skin. I went with the CeraVe brand because I read it was best for people prone to breakouts

Step 3:

Apply Cetaphil Daily Oil-Free Hydrating Face Lotion. I use a lotion vs moisturizer because it’s lighter and doesn’t irritate my skin as much. And I don’t use a lotion with SPF because my foundation powder has it included.

Evening Routine:

Step 1:

If I’ve worn makeup or sweat a lot during the day, I apply a cleanser. Specifically, the Cetaphil daily facial cleanser. If not, I just rinse my face with water. Again, I have to be careful to not over dry my skin so if I haven’t worn makeup just a quick rinse will do.

Step 2:

Apply Tretinoin cream. This is a prescription cream for my acne. The ingredients exfoliate the skin which helps the complexion but can lead to dryness, so I usually apply every other day. I use just 4 small dots, one to my forehead, two cheeks and one to the chin then rub it in and evenly apply.

Step 3:

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion. Again, choosing a lotion versus a moisturizer because it’s lighter on my skin which helps reducing breakouts.

That’s it. Super simple. I’ve found the more streamlined the routine the better for me. I’ve had quite the skin care journey and have tried almost every brand imaginable. The drugstore brands I’m using today, CeraVe and Cetaphil, are the only ones that have not cause a breakout, skin irritancy or dryness. Sometimes a legacy brand is better than a flashy new brand with fun marketing. As the adage goes, don’t judge a book by its cover!
