Dressing For Weddings Should Be More Fun

I have a wedding coming up and my gosh preparing for it is not fun… I’m not even the bride.

My hatred of the wedding industry at large runs deep, but I’ll spare you all the details and just save it to the dress portion.

As I mentioned, I have a wedding coming up. I am not the bride, but I am a bridesmaid. I know this is not a new sentiment but man oh man why are bridesmaid’s dresses always heinous. I will admit, they have come a long way since the 80s, but one dress does not fit all.

I really think the wedding industry preys on women to get them to over buy, over shop and over indulge. That includes the bridesmaid dresses. In what setting do multiple women wear the same dress. And if not the same dress, same fabric. Is the purpose meant to be an identifier? Are we in an exclusive club? Or are we meant to fade in to the background, be a blocking for the bride from a photography standpoint? In today’s modern era does any of it make sense?

I’ve noticed a few weddings where there isn’t a bridal party, or if they do they don’t pre-selct an outfit. Maybe they provide color guidance, but you can choose whatever you want within the guidelines. I hope that is the future of the bridesmaid dress. It really is so nonsensical to have a group of girls wearing the same thing, but alas.

My final thought is why aren’t there dress rentals for bridesmaid dresses? There are plenty of dress rentals and designer goods rentals, why not a rental for the bridesmaid dresses? I guess it could end up being just as expensive with the dry cleaning costs, but you don’t get to keep it? I think there’s a market there… someone get to work on it :)
