Edinburgh on a Budget

View from Calton Hill

As I mentioned in my previous Scotland post, there are many fun things you can do in Edinburgh… for a cost. But what if you are on a strict budge? Are there things for people trying to be fiscally conservative… yes, yes there are. Arguably, more things for those on a budget.

Of course, everyone has their own idea of what a fun activity is, but these are my top five free items and one I don't think I'd do again.

National Museum of Scotland:

There is amazing rooftop terrace with fantastic views of the city. It also has more than just views. If you are a museum person, or a history buff this place is huge you could definitely spend an entire day exploring, but if you are short on time or just want some good photos head straight for the top for a different view of the castle.

Calton Hill:

If you want panoramic views of the city, plus a semi strenuous hike, but don't want to be in pain the next day… this is your spot. It's a bit out of the center of the city so if you aren't staying nearby, it's a bit of a hike just to get there. But I found it well worth it. There are a few different pathways that lead you to the top, some more rustic than others but all do-able for a casual walker. Once you get to the top, the views are amazing plus you are surrounded by monuments and relics. A best of both world situation.

Greyfriars Cemetery:

This is particularly exciting for Harry Potter buffs, legend has it JK Rowling gathered her name inspiration here… there is a Tom Marvolo Riddle grave site after all. Even if you couldn't care less about Harry Potter, I always find cemetery's to be fascinating, like a live history museum (no pun intended).

Victoria Street:

This is probably one of the most photographed streets. When you see a photo of Edinburgh, it's usually of Victoria Street. Another stop for the Harry Potter buffs - the multicolored shops are said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley. Although the shops cost money to buy things, the street itself is free and who doesn’t love a window shop.

Botanical Gardens:

As I mentioned in my post the other day, I didn't even have this place on my list, and now it's a must do for me. It was such a nice reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city and with lush gardens and various trails you could spend half a day wandering around.

OK so there you have the 5 things I would recommend to anyone going to Edinburgh on a budget. But what is the one place I would highly advise against?

Well, that would be Arthur's Seat. Probably a controversial worst pick, sorry to all my hikers, but it wasn't for me. If you are like me, a semi athletic partial trail walker - it's not for you either. On top of it being too strenuous for the casual hiker it is out of the way of the main city area and quite literally a hike to get up to. If it's not a nice day, which more often than not it's going to be cloudy, it's not really worth the views.

So there you have it. What I would do again in Edinburgh on a budget. Can't wait to hear your thoughts! What would you do differently? Where have you gone on a budget? Enjoy!
